There will be a memorial service on Sunday 21st August, from 3pm to 3:45pm to remember the children who died on the 'City of Benares'.

The service will be held at Sunderland Minster and everyone is welcome to attend.

On 17th September, 1940, the "City of Benares" ocean liner, refitted as an evacuation ship, was steaming from Liverpool to Canada when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine. There were 100 children on board, eleven of them from Sunderland. Nine of those children died.

The Brigade is delighted to announce that Jane Evans has succeeded Rose Roberts as Company Secretary. Rose will continue in her role as Treasurer. We extend our sincere gratitude to Rose for her exceptional service as Secretary and are confident that Jane will make a valuable contribution to the Brigade.

Additionally, we warmly welcome Councillor David Newey as our new Chairperson. He assumes this position following the retirement of Barry Curran, who stepped down last year to focus on his responsibilities with Sunderland City Council.
